Halsey McKay is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of new paintings by Hope Gangloff and sculptures by Jennie Jieun Lee. Brought together for the first time, the exhibition highlights each artists’ mastery of craft, color, and inventive extrapolation of technique as both transform the familiar into the fantastic.

Within the grand tradition of portraiture, the sitter is commonly surrounded by personal effects meant to provide clues to the identity and personality of the sitter, attributes. In Hope Gangloff’s paintings, these attributes become the subject and the sitter, a clever foil which allows for their depiction. Crazy quilts, space heaters, LPs, Mad Magazine, cactus, all people the canvas with a wild profusion of color, texture, pattern, and detail. Gangloff portrays a generation not through its luminaries but through the unsung details which often escape attention.

In her busts, pedestals, and figures Jennie Jieun Lee uses washes of glaze along with three-dimensional embellishments to add both weight and levity to her porcelain and ceramic creations. Departing from her formal training, Lee has created a signature experimental style and approach to color, shape, and mark-making. Layered glazes, drips, and pours borrow from painting, while the energy captured in the works speak to the artist’s personal investment in the material, which feels transformed almost through catharsis reflecting her personal history.

Hope Gangloff was born in 1974 in Amityville, NY and is a graduate of The Cooper Union School of Art and Science. She has exhibited internationally with museum exhibitions at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, CA,  the Broad Art Museum, MI; the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, MO. Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Last Magazine, Modern Painters, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Paris Review, Vice, and The Village Voice among others. She lives and works in Queens, NY and is represented by Susan Inglett Gallery.

Jennie Jieun Lee was born in 1973 in Seoul, Korea and is a graduate of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Lee is the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Artadia Award and CSULB Graduate Research Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad at the Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY; Marlborough Chelsea, New York; The Pit, Los Angeles; Cooper Cole, Toronto; Galerie Lefebvre et Fils, Paris; Jacob Bjorn Gallery, Arhus. She lives and works in Long Beach, CA and is represented by Martos Gallery.
