Halsey McKay is pleased to present Sun Drawn, Lauren Luloff’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. In her new paintings, Luloff continues to combine layers of fabric with hand painted patterns and plant life into compositions that float like ethereal visages on their stretcher bars. The artist consistently situates herself in landscapes that she finds inspiring for their natural beauty and cultural significance. For these new works she spent weeks drawing the trees in a local cemetery and the foliage in her community garden. Hydrangeas, sunflowers, spruce, begonias, pine, and hollyhocks are painted as close to life as possible, rendered in bleach, on bed sheets. These naturalist depictions are intuitively married with patterns inspired by woodblock techniques that she studied in the village of Ajrakhpur, India. For the first time Luloff will exhibit her ongoing body of ceramic works. These hardened clay abstractions serve as a dense foil to her gossamer-light pictures, elevating earth to air as floating segments of glazed stoneware punctuate the walls.
