APRIL 6 – 30, 2013HALSEY MCKAY is pleased to present Blind, a solo exhibition of paintings by Virva Hinnemo. While modest in scale her work journeys through the vast psychological properties of perception. Hinnemo is rooted in the observation of nature. Over time, her way of grappling with forms hesitates just long enough to permit theseformal abstractions to forge. Always skirting a more predictable view of the world, Hinnemo’s form, shapes, color and structure are beautifully arrived at. Rather than depictions, each painting acts as an insinuation, a memory or allusion to language.

Hinnemo may start with a vibrant colorscape but through the act of painting arrives at a more terrestrial palette. The marks can conjure tree bark, mulch, slivers of sky and shimmers of liquid. Sometimes she carves through paint; her visceral application highlights her deft hand. Rough, elegant, felt, humble, Hinnemo graces each work with a genuine vision.

Virva Hinnemo was born in Helsinki Finland and now lives and works in East Hampton. She was educated at the Nyckelviks School of Art, Stockholm, Sweden; The Music Academy of Stockholm, Sweden and holds a Bachelors degree from Parson School of Design in New York. Solo and group exhibitions have been at Kouros Gallery, New York, NY; Peter Fingsten Gallery at Pace University, New York, NY; Feigen Contemporary, New York, NY; Abrons Art Center, New York, NY; Pace Universtity Gallery, Pleasantville, NY; David Hall, Wellesley, MA; DNA Gallery, Provincetown, MA.
