Halsey McKay Gallery is pleased to present Confluence, Alexander Russi’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Confluence features Russi’s recent work that explores historical sites and intimate landscapes. Sources range from Russi’s ten by fifteen foot backyard garden in Brooklyn, New York, to the C&O Canal at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. Russi’s acute awareness of ephemerality, a moment of performance grounded in nature, is surveyed in his painterly documentation. Tunnels, shadows, and wildflowers emerge and recede in evolving landscapes. Shifts in scale, time and place create a dynamic conversation between paintings and direct attention to the transient world around us. Russi considers observation an intentional act, one that grounds us within our environment, and imbues these recent paintings with a sense of quiet contemplation.

Alexander Russi was born in Denver, CO in 1991. Russi holds a BFA from New York University and awards from the Martin Wong Foundation and the Fountainhead Residency.  He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
