An Hoang, Apple Moon, 2023, Oil on canvas, 64 x 52 inches

Halsey McKay Gallery presents The Apple and the Moon, An Hoang’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Stemming from Hoang’s personal experiences and memories, her abstractions encapsulate the artist’s reflections on her surrounding landscapes. Her latest paintings capture fleeting moments in nature, while introducing a recently developed bright and vibrant palette on a larger scale.

Hoang cites her relocation from Brooklyn to upstate New York for this chromatic development. While living in the city, her paintings depicted visions of sweeping vistas, nimbostratus clouds, and aerial views in urban greys and cold hues. Now she finds herself physically within these previously imagined landscapes, resulting in paintings that reflect the colorful blaze of autumn, lush spring, and summer hues endemic to the countryside. Drawing from her memory, the artist looks to capture the abstract elements of weather, time, and space.

Billowing forms move the eye across the canvas, unveiling a more prominent role of gesture and line, in contrast to the scumbled atmospheres prominent in her earlier compositions. In The Apple and the Moon, the vivid, undulating paintings celebrate the hope and possibility that comes from the sublime transitions of the seasons.

An Hoang was born in Washington D.C. and lives in the Lower Hudson Valley, NY. Recent exhibitions include Turn Gallery, New York, NY; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton, NY; Tracey Morgan Gallery, Asheville, NC; Able Baker Contemporary, Portland, ME; Leftfield Gallery, Los Osos, CA; Livingstone Gallery, The Netherlands.
