SABRA MOON ELLIOT – POT PAINTINGS

APRIL 13 – MAY 19 | 79 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, NY

Halsey McKay is pleased to present Pot Paintings, our first exhibition with Sabra Moon Elliot. Elliot’s recent work explores vessels—one of the earliest forms of human made objects—and how they visually unite painting and sculpture. Like the functional forms created by artists such as Mary Heilmann and Franz West, Elliot sees her containers as both three-dimensional objects and planar surfaces that offer implied motion, depth, and an interplay of colors.

Much of her output takes inspiration from ceramics and American quiltmaking—mediums traditionally considered outside of the Canon of Fine Art despite their prehistoric origins. With these interests, Elliot is aligned with many of the New York School’s original AbEx painters, such as Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko, yet through crafts traditionally galvanized by women.

In these objects, undulating forms and the geometric grids upon them subvert each other yet meld together into something unique. Using various improvised strategies, Elliot repeatedly disrupts preconceived notions about her chosen mediums while continually evoking links to our most ancient and essential art forms.

Sabra Moon Elliot (b. 1980, New York, NY) received a Bachelor of Science in film from New York University and studied art history at Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy. Her work has been exhibited at Ceysson & Bénétière, New York, NY; Onna House, East Hampton, NY; The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, NY, and Tripoli Gallery, South Hampton, NY.
